The end of the end
Friday June 15th 2007
by Paul Armstrong
It's later in the evening on a Friday and the sun is going down. Everyone is running about gathering markers, lotions, food and random pieces of underwear. Everything in reverse. The kids are next door with their cousins. The house is quiet. The bags piled. Boxes stacked. Car hoods open and a quiet whir of the fan is the only voice. Leaving a vacation is sad, while being needed. The weight or returning to responsibilities; paying the bills, mowing the grass, making dinners, getting up early to get back to work, load on your back. To be a kid again, just coming and going and being. Just being. Summers aren't the same -- they aren't bad, but they're not the same.

Yeah, today is our official "last" day. We spent Saturday and Sunday with our friends here in Wilmington NC (the Worley's). Tomorrow is the LONG drive home and back to the grind on Tuesday.
